ABOUT US – COMPANY BACKGROUND
Why Waste is a total waste management services company and a recovery and recycling depot. The waste business was first started by the Patel family in Dundee in 1969. They then moved to Ladysmith and continued with their business. At the tender age of 18 Aslam joined the ‘waste game’ and in 1996 he opened Why Waste.
The company has grown from strength to strength since its inception and now boasts a staff complement of 70. The company has a management team that is dedicated and passionate about their tasks and they pride themselves on service excellence. They have the expertise and are committed to environmental conservation and through the marketing teams recycling campaigns, they encourage and educate the communities to reuse, reduce and recycle waste.
Why Waste is a member of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa. High standards with all aspects of business Occupational health and Safety are complied with in accordance to national regulations. Why Waste is also a proud member of Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce and work very closely with the local municipality, schools, hospitals and local businesses in their efforts to GO GREEN.

In November 2014, WHY WASTE acquired a Waste Management License (WML) – issued in terms of Section 49(1) of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008(Act no. 59 of 2008). The WML was granted by the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs (DAEA) and obligates WHY WASTE to perform all activities that are outlined in WML’s Environmental Management programme (EMPr) in an environmentally sound and responsible manner and in accordance with all relevant legislation policies, norms and standards.
In September 2016, in their bid to highlight the benefits and need for recycling, and to commemorate Recycling Month, WHY WASTE, together with the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce and Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), hosted a Recycling Poetry Competition for local schools.
The aim of this exercise was to create awareness amongst the youth about recycling and WHY WASTE certainly achieved their objective. To date, Why Waste has reached out to almost 100 schools through our FREE recycling presentations/training programs to help establish their recycling programs.

Why Waste, through its Social Responsibility programme, are empowering the previously disadvantaged through the process of creating jobs. They have supplied branded trolleys to waste pickers who collect recycling in and around Ladysmith town. Why Waste is also involved in the waste-pickers recycling program at the local landfill.
They have also empowered people with their own trucks or bakkies (also called contractors) through Self Help Projects. The hawkers are collecting recyclable material from their respective municipal areas and get premium rate for same at Why Waste.
